Through lectures, dialogues, and practical activities, the program aims to deepen philosophical understanding and academic skills.Academic ActivitiesThe summer school featured special lectures by scholars from Freie Universität Berlin, University of Athens, University of Tübingen, University of Macau, Zhejiang University, and Tongji University. Over five days, students from around the world engaged in academic exchanges and cultural activities, exploring possible dialogues between the thoughts of Laozi, Heraclitus, Parmenides, and Heidegger. They sought intellectual resonance across regions and experienced the unique blend of tradition and modernity in Hangzhou.Additionally, students visited the China National Tea Museum, where they immersed themselves in the profound culture of Chinese tea.Closing CeremonyOn August 31, the closing ceremony marked the end of the five-day journey. Professor Sun Zhouxing from Zhejiang University delivered a lecture titled The Affinity of Dao: Heidegger's Future Thinking, exploring the connections between Heidegger’s philosophy and traditional Chinese thought, particularly Daoism. Instructors then presented certificates to all participants.Though the summer school has ended, it represents not a conclusion but a new beginning. This program has broadened students’ perspectives on intercultural philosophy and provided a platform for deep reflection and exchange. It is hoped that students will continue to promote intercultural dialogue, integrate philosophical ideas from diverse cultural backgrounds, and expand the boundaries of human thought in pursuit of philosophical enlightenment.

  • To further enhance students’ ability of academic research and communication, we hold the International Master Class in Phenomenology this summer. The Master class was organized jointly by the School of Philosophy at ZJU, and the Center for Subjectivity Research at the University of Copenhagen, from July 1st to July 19th. Prof. Dan Zahavi, the director of the Center for Subjectivity Research, as well as a world-renowned scholar in phenomenology and Husserl studies, was invited to give eight talks on Husserl’s phenomenology. During the course, Prof. Zahavi discussed several important topics such as perception, embodiment, selfhood, empathy, and the lifeworld. This summer school is also available for students and faculty members outside ZJU. Over 50 participants attended this summer school. These students come from UCL, the University of British Columbia, Sun Yat-sen University, and other institutions. To encourage in-depth studies in Husserl’s phenomenology, we hold a workshop after the talk. For these students who intend to participate in this workshop, they are required to report on the selection of topics on Aug 17th and then submit an essay in English. Among the over ten submitted drafts, five essays were chosen and presented in the workshop on Sep 19th where Prof. Zahavi attended and gave comments.

  • The School of Philosophy at ZJU, in collaboration with the Department of Philosophy and Moral Sciences at Ghent University and the Department of Information and Computing Sciences at Utrecht University, hosted an online summer school for undergraduates to enrich their research skills and to broaden their academic horizons. The summer school consisted of two modules that ran from July 3rd to July 7th and from July 31st to August 4th respectively. The first module, titled “The Subject of Psychoanalysis is the Subject of Science,” was taught by Professor Gertrudis Van de Vijver from Ghent University. This module explored the topics of phenomenology and postmodern philosophy, and examined the works of philosophers such as Kant, Husserl, and Lacan. The module also discussed the complex relationship between scientific objectivity and psychoanalysis.  The second module, “Logic of Norms,” was led by Professors John-Jules Meyer and Mehdi Dastani from Utrecht University. This module introduced the students to deontic logic, a formal system for reasoning about normative concepts such as obligations and permissions. The module also showed how deontic logic can be applied to various domains, especially computer science. The students were very engaged in the course, as they planned their studies according to the course content, took detailed notes during the lectures, and joined lively discussions with the instructors and their classmates. After the course, the majority of students submitted well-written assignments that reflected their understanding and insights. The assignments not only showed the remarkable progress the students made in a short time, but also highlighted their research abilities and academic qualities. The professors provided constructive feedback to help the students improve their academic skills. Module convenor’s devotion and student’s participation greatly contribute to the successful outcome of this summer school. This online summer school is also the 2nd SoP ZJU Brand Summer School, a series of summer programs that started in 2022. The aim of this series is to offer undergraduates in philosophy at ZJU the chance to learn from leading scholars and researchers from prestigious academic institutions around the world. Last year we collaborated with the Department of Philosophy at University at University of Jena, Underwood International College at Yonsei University, Department of Philosophy at University of Kansas, Department of Indian Philosophy and Buddhist Studies at the university of Tokyo. We will continue to improve this project, cooperate with other top academic institutions, and provide more high-quality summer courses for students at Zhejiang University.
